Why Confidence is Key
For the past 8 years I have coached football at Hastings Middle School in Upper Arlington, OH. This fall is my first season not coaching. I decided to take the season off to focus on my family and business growth. One thing I’m reminded of today that I used to say to the team before every game was,
“Be Confident—Play Fast”
I said this phrase to remind the players that confidence is the key to success. We have trained, we have studied the opponent, and have prepared throughout the week for this game. They should be confident in their ability to compete and win the game. When you play confident, you play faster because you aren’t thinking, you are just reacting and the training will take over. If you think too much, in your own head, and playing without confidence, you’re beat.
This saying reminds me that we need to play with confidence in our own lives. Be confident at work—make that sale, trust your abilities and make that phone call, or be confident in reaching out to that new contact. Confidence is the key to success in all areas of life. When you play confident in life, you open yourself to new opportunities and experiences because you trust in your ability to do that cool new thing, or take that risk. You begin to trust that your previous experiences in life or training on the job will carry you through the game. So play with confidence, trust yourself, and play fast.
